Re: A Controversial Idea

Consciousness is such a weird and amazing thing. It absolutely blows me away that it is the result of cumulative electrochemical reactions in my brain, to the point that there are times, that awe borders on it giving me hope that maybe we are something more than what we, well, are, that maybe just maybe there could be something paraphysical that could survive death. As a thanatophobe, I can't help those thoughts, and I readily admit that they are irrational.

But when they happen, they are mildly comforting at least.

I'm going to "devils advocate" for christianity for a minute.

Consciousness is the state or quality of awareness or of being aware of an external object or something within oneself. It is, as near as we can tell, an emergent property of the mind. Things that are "conscious" demonstrate their awareness.

Who is to say that a "soul" isn't an emergent property of a living conscious entity?
